Understanding Dermaplaning

At its core, dermaplaning is a physical exfoliation method. Unlike chemical peels, which rely on acids to dissolve dead skin cells, or microdermabrasion, which uses tiny crystals to abrade the skin, dermaplaning utilizes a sterile, surgical scalpel to shave off the topmost layer of the skin delicately. This process removes dead skin cells, peach fuzz (vellus hairs) and minor surface imperfections, resulting in a fresh and revitalized skin surface.

Why Choose Dermaplaning?

Immediate Results

Dermaplaning is not just a procedure; it’s an experience of transformation. What sets it apart from many other skincare treatments is the immediacy of its results. There’s no waiting period; no “results may vary” ambiguity. Upon completion of a session, clients are often amazed to see a discernible difference in their skin’s luminosity and texture.

The topmost layer of dead skin cells, which often dulls the complexion, is expertly removed, unveiling a brighter, smoother, more even-toned complexion beneath. This almost instant transformation makes dermaplaning an ideal choice for those prepping for a special event or seeking a quick skin refresher.

No Downtime

In the beauty and skincare industry, effectiveness often comes with a caveat—recovery time. Many procedures, though beneficial, require days or even weeks of downtime, during which the skin heals and the full results manifest.

Dermaplaning stands out in this regard. The procedure is so gentle that once it’s completed, individuals can immediately go back to their daily routines. No post-treatment redness or sensitivity keeps you sidelined whether you have a work meeting, a social event, or other commitments.

Suitable for Most Skin Types

Skin is as individual as fingerprints—what works for one might not work for another. However, dermaplaning’s non-chemical and gentle exfoliation approach makes it a universally appealing treatment. While it’s imperative always to have a pre-treatment consultation with a skincare professional, most will find dermaplaning compatible with their skin type.

This includes those with sensitive skin, a demographic often excluded from more aggressive treatments. The primary exception is those with active acne breakouts, as the procedure could irritate the inflamed skin further. But dermaplaning offers a safe pathway to enhanced skin health for the vast majority.

Enhanced Product Absorption

A significant but sometimes overlooked benefit of dermaplaning is its ability to amplify the benefits of daily skincare routines. The skin’s surface, laden with dead skin cells and fine vellus hairs (peach fuzz), can act as a barrier, preventing skincare products from fully penetrating and delivering their active ingredients.

The skin becomes more receptive once this layer is expertly removed through dermaplaning. Serums, moisturizers, and other topical treatments can delve deeper into the skin layers, working more effectively. As a result, not only does the skin benefit more from the dermaplaning procedure itself, but also from an optimized daily skincare regimen.

Dermaplaning at EHS

Our EHS approach emphasizes safety and efficacy. The procedure begins with a thorough cleansing of the skin. A trained aesthetician then uses the scalpel at a 45-degree angle, employing short, swift strokes to exfoliate the skin’s surface. The entire process is typically painless, with many clients likening the sensation to shaving. Post-treatment, a soothing serum or moisturizer is applied to hydrate and protect the newly revealed skin layer.

Benefits Beyond Exfoliation

While the primary goal of dermaplaning is exfoliation, it's benefits don't stop there!

Reduction

of Fine Lines

Age and exposure to the elements can lead to fine lines, subtle indicators of the skin’s natural aging process. These lines primarily form in the outermost layers of the skin.

Through dermaplaning, which meticulously exfoliates these superficial layers, the appearance of these fine lines can be significantly diminished. The result is a rejuvenated skin surface that looks and feels smoother, giving a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Enhanced

Makeup Application

The makeup application on a canvas of peach fuzz and dead skin cells often results in an uneven finish. The texture of these impediments can cause makeup to clump, streak, or not blend seamlessly. Post-dermaplaning, the skin becomes an ideal canvas.

Removing vellus hair (peach fuzz) and the top layer of dead skin allows for a smoother makeup application. Foundation, blush, and other products adhere better, producing a more polished and flawless finish that enhances the skin’s natural beauty.

Safe

Hair Removal

Many have reservations about facial hair removal due to concerns about hair regrowing thicker or darker. The fine, soft vellus hair, or peach fuzz, that covers our face might seem innocuous, but it can sometimes inhibit skincare products from being absorbed effectively.

Dermaplaning addresses this concern head-on, safely removing this facial hair without the risks associated with traditional hair removal methods. Contrary to a widespread myth, the hair doesn’t grow back thicker or coarser after dermaplaning, making it a safe and effective facial hair removal method.

Mitigation

of Acne Scarring

Acne scars, remnants of past breakouts, can be a source of self-consciousness for many. While dermaplaning isn’t a targeted treatment for deep-set scars, it offers hope for those with superficial scarring.

By gently exfoliating the skin’s surface, dermaplaning promotes a more even texture and tone, reducing the prominence of minor acne scars. Over time, with regular sessions, individuals may notice their acne scars appearing less distinct, boosting their confidence in their skin’s appearance.
